The flaws in the film lies with the over melodrama and even over romantic factor in the film as well as its length which could have been cut down by editor Rajesh Pandey who also succeeds in bringing some great moments in a slick yet stronger form. The biographical crime drama is directed by Bhansali, who has previously helmed larger than life films like Goliyon ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, Padmavaat and Bajirao Mastani. This film lies among his best works "Khamoshi" (1996), "Black" (2005) and "Guzaarish" (2010) with some nice twists and moments. The director brings the Desi adaptation on screen with high gloss and great moments 25 years after what the 1988 Hindi classic "Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak" (Dir: Mansoor Khan) had brought. If that sounds like fun, it most certainly is.Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali returns with a bang with this highly commercial venture based adaptation of William Shakespeare's romantic classic "Romeo and Juliet", showcasing excellence with great technical and lead work. She forces Singh to dial up his own not inconsequential star power in the scenes they share, which leads to a situation where we get to watch two wildly attractive actors giving their absolute all and meshing terrifically from a chemistry standpoint. Quite the movie star in her own right, Chopra seems insubstantial compared to Padukone, who's very close-if she isn't there already-to becoming the star among stars in her generation. The physical vitality of her work in the film is almost unfair to Priyanka Chopra, who cameos in an item number. The striking thing about her performance as Leela is how tightly coiled and tense it seems she's ready at a moment's notice to kiss or kill (or both), never passive, never merely a photographic subject. Singh prevails over a very odd (even by masala hero standards) mustache to give a deeply affecting and rich performance as Ram, but it's Padukone, as is increasingly the case, who steals the show with pure, deliberate, ferocious star power. What makes the ride as enjoyable as it is, and what truly give focus to Bhansali's lush, colorful compositions, are the performances of Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone in the leads.
